Turn Your iPhone into a Pet-tracking Camera

Apple Wants to Turn Your iPhone into a Pet-tracking Camera

Your iPhone can be used as an autonomous pet-tracking camera thanks to a new development framework from Apple.

Developers can capture and follow your pet around your home while you’re away, according to documentation on the Apple website, by using pet-tracking features with motorized phone stands.

As noted by Apple, developers can achieve this using a new framework called DockKit, which can create “photo and video experiences” while an iPhone is mounted on a motorized stand.

The Animal Body Pose API (application programming interface) is then available for use by developers, and it can be used to recognize and track animals using the camera on your phone.

Additionally, it can recognize your pet’s posture, such as whether it’s sitting, standing, or begging for food.

By combining DockKit with Animal Body Pose API, Apple says devs can create apps that “automatically track subjects in live video across a 360-degree field of view, take direct control of the stand to customize framing, directly control the motors, and provide your own inference model for tracking other objects.”

Pet-tracking is not an official iOS 17 feature that Apple is shipping, but the company is providing developers with the resources they need to build and distribute their own iPhone-powered pet cams. Apple intends to go into greater detail about all of this in a future session at its Worldwide Developers Conference.

Despite the fact that swiveling iPhone holders have been available for some time, the fact that Apple integrated the feature directly into its ecosystem means that you may not always need to use a proprietary app in order for the mount you’re using to work properly.

Apple is also releasing a new docking feature called StandBy, which transforms your iPhone into a smart home-like display when it is charging and tilted sideways. This suggests that Apple has bigger plans for how you can use your iPhone while docked.
