iPhone 16 Pro Max Rumored to Feature Super Telephoto Camera

According to a recent report from Asia, the iPhone 16 Pro Max may be the first smartphone to include a super telephoto periscope camera for significantly increased optical zoom.

The information comes from the Weibo account “Digital Chat Station,” which has provided accurate information about Plans Apple has made in the past. The label of “super” or “ultra” telephoto is usually afforded to cameras with a focal length over 300mm, drastically magnifying and pulling in distant subjects.

A focal length greater than 300mm on the iPhone 16 Pro Max would be a very significant increase from the telephoto camera on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro models, which has an equivalent focal length of 77mm.

The extremely soft backgrounds that super telephoto lenses produce make them useful for portrait photography as well, so long as there is enough space between the subject and the photographer. Super telephoto lenses are frequently used for sports and wild animal photography.

The transition appears to be made easier by Apple’s later this year, starting with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, upgrade to a periscope telephoto camera system. With next year’s ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro models, Apple is reportedly planning to bring the telephoto camera to both of the “Pro” models, apparently enabled by increasing the smaller model’s size.

As such, giving the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max a super telephoto periscope would enable Apple to maintain differentiation between the two “Pro” devices next year.

The Weibo user also reaffirmed their earlier claim that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a camera sensor that is 12% bigger and measures 1/1.14 inches. The 1/1.28-inch sensor used in the current iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is not anticipated to be increased in size for this year’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The background blur and dynamic range of the primary iPhone camera may be enhanced by a larger sensor. A larger surface area can capture more light with the same shutter speed and aperture, which could also significantly improve low-light photography capabilities.

The Weibo user did not specifically state which devices in the “iPhone 16” lineup the rumor relates to in their most recent post, but based on their prior comments, it is assumed to refer exclusively to the “iPhone 16” Pro Max. Earlier this year, the same user posted information about cameras under the same headings and claimed to have insider knowledge.
