Norelis Mendoza’s Mother’s Day morning outing with her ex-partner and the father of her two children, which had apparently started as a night out on the town, ended in terror and death on a lonely Jersey City road.

The detective’s affidavit states that on the evening of May 13, Mendoza and Gregory Mallard, with whom she shared two young children and a troubled relationship marked by violence, spent two hours together at the American Dream Mall. How the two passed the time is not mentioned by the detective.

The couple eventually left at 12:30 a.m., apparently traveling to Jersey City, with Mallard at the wheel of Mendoza’s blue Dodge RAM. They were next seen at one in the morning. outside a bar on Downtown, Bay Street, at 2:04 a.m. the pair was once again on the move. They were captured on camera at a McDonald’s on Communipaw Avenue across from the city at 3:53 a.m. At 4:20 a.m., the two left the McDonald’s.

The couple’s next sighting and the end of the 32-year-old mother’s night with Mallard occurred on Burma Road, a north-south street close to Liberty State Park that is lined with warehouses and businesses.

The detective describes video footage from a nearby camera:

“Detectives were able to view surveillance footage from Burma Rd in Jersey City that shows Mendoza running toward the intersection of Burma Rd and Thomas McGovern Avenue at around 4:31 AM before being hit from behind by the blue Dodge Ram. After that, Mendoza can be seen standing and returning past the car. When the blue Dodge RAM makes a U-turn, it runs over Mendoza once more. Mallard is observed exiting the vehicle and placing Mendoza in the passenger side.”
