Following years of discussion, body cameras will finally be worn by Portland Police officers starting next week as part of a pilot test.
The first trial follows the unanimous adoption of a negotiated agreement for Portland police body-worn cameras by the Portland City Council on April 26.
“Today is a historic day,” Following the vote in April, Ted Wheeler, the mayor of Portland, made the statement.
The chief dispute in these negotiations, according to the president of PPB’s union, concerned how and when officers could see the footage from their own body cameras following a lethal use of force.
However, the pilot test will start on Monday, August, after receiving approval from the Council and Union support for the proposal. 21 and run through Oct. 19.
Patrol officers in the Central Precinct and members of the Focused Intervention Team will be the first officers to wear cameras.
The results of the initial pilot test will be evaluated afterward, allowing for any necessary adjustments and further negotiations. According to the current schedule, all implementation will be finished between April and August 2024.
