Google’s Camera App is Getting a Minor Facelift

The Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will be officially unveiled next month, and Google is preparing its Camera app for the event. According to information posted on the reliable Google News Telegram channel, Google Camera version 9.0 is soon to arrive and is expected to bring a number of minor changes to the camera UI, including reorganized settings and a new app icon.

The Telegram post states that Google Camera version 9.0.115.561695573.37 will bring about a number of minor but helpful changes.

The biggest organizational change is a change to the camera function strip that is displayed under the shutter button. There will be a persistent toggle in the viewfinder for switching between photo and video modes, and the strip will only display the relevant functions for the mode you are shooting in.

A few less significant changes have also been made. The buttons to open the camera roll and switch between front- and rear-facing cameras are now located in different places, and you can now swipe up in the viewfinder to access the Camera app’s settings.

With a larger camera silhouette proportionate to the size of the icon as a whole, the Camera app’s icon is finally receiving a minor update that improves its legibility.

This is the first time we’ve seen the new Camera icon or the update’s version number, even though we’ve already seen this new UI in action earlier this month. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro’s release of this new Google Camera app makes perfect sense given that the new phones will be unveiled on October 4 at a Google event in New York.

We anticipate that the updated Camera app will soon be available on the majority of Pixel devices, wherever the new UI makes its debut.
