Ring Peephole Camera Review 2022: Is It Worthy To Buy?

For people, the Ring Peephole Camera functions as a video doorbell. or at least has a peephole. It is made for people who live in apartments or anyone else who uses a peephole lens to see who is at their door. This wireless smart doorbell is simple to install and offers motion detection, video recording, and support for Amazon Alexa voice commands.

This camera operates nearly identically to a video doorbell, whether you live in an apartment or anywhere else that has peepholes; however, it modifies your door’s peephole rather than requiring you to connect it to a doorbell fixture.

Ring Peephole Cam Features

The Ring Peephole Cam comes with a lot of useful features, such as HD resolution and two-way audio.

The Ring Peephole Cam has average features for a doorbell camera. Although it wouldn’t receive any honors from us for being the best video doorbell, it’s still quite good. You get two-way audio, 1080p HD video, a fair-sized field of view, night vision, and these features.

Ring Peephole Cam

Features of the Ring Peephole Cam include:

  • 1080p HD video resolution
  • HDR
  • 155º field of view
  • Knock-sensing capability
  • Motion detection
  • Infrared night vision
  • Adjustable motion zones
  • Amazon Alexa integration
  • Motion alert scheduling function
  • Two-way audio with noise cancellation
  • Rechargeable battery pack
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi compatibility

The Ring Peephole Cam’s best feature is undoubtedly the fact that it can be installed using your existing peephole.

As a result, this camera is divided into two parts: the exterior part that goes on the outside of your door, and the interior part that holds the battery pack and lets you look through your peephole the old-fashioned way.

1080p Video Resolution

1080p is the pretty standard resolution for doorbell cameras these days. Actually, it surpasses the quality of a doorbell camera like the one from ADT. You can view the Ring Peephole Cam’s sharp, clear images as either recorded clips or in the live feed through the Ring app.

Every doorbell camera we’ve ever tested has motion detection. Even before they ring the doorbell, the cameras begin to record when someone approaches your porch.

With knock-sensing, the Ring Peephole Cam goes above and beyond the conventional motion detection feature. Even if they are unaware that they could simply press the button on the device to “ring” your “doorbell,” this camera can detect when someone is knocking on your door.”

Given that the camera could simply alert you when it detects motion, knock-sensing might not seem like a big deal. But pay attention: it’s kind of a big deal. Motion alerts can get very annoying very quickly if you live in an apartment complex with a lot of people walking through your hallway all day.

You might just want to turn off the motion alerts altogether if they become too annoying. How will you then be able to tell if someone is at your door, though? especially if they simply skip pressing the button on the Ring cam. . . knock?

You will be notified when someone knocks on your door by using that knock-sending feature, which makes sure. As a result, you can disable the motion detection feature without worrying that you’ll miss half of the guests who arrive.

Rechargeable Battery

Some other Ring models, such as the Ring Pro, are hardwired into your doorbell’s existing wiring. Obviously, the Peephole Cam needs to operate a little differently. Hence, its battery pack is rechargeable.

On the inside of the Peephole Cam is where the battery pack is located. If you need to charge it, all you have to do is take it out of the housing and plug a micro-USB cable into it. Between five and ten hours pass.3

Motion Zones And Scheduling

We’ve already touched on how difficult motion detection can be in settings like an apartment complex.

It’s typically not an issue if you live in a house. However, it can be challenging to modify your camera’s motion detection in apartment buildings so that you don’t receive a push notification each time someone enters the hallway.

The Ring Peephole Cam does have a motion zone adjustment feature. The motion zones, however, cannot be customized, unlike some doorbell cameras, such as Google Nest Hello. You cannot precisely control which areas the camera should view and which it should ignore. It more closely resembles a single area of coverage that you can modify.

Installation And Performance Of Ring Peephole Cam

The Peephole Cam is simple to install. Charge the battery, download the Ring app, and make an account first. Open the app, and choose Set Up A Device from the list on the left after choosing Doorbells from the drop-down menu. A location for the installation (your home address) can be selected by scanning the QR code on the setup sheet.

Give the doorbell a name (front door, back door, office, or custom) and indicate to the app whether you have already set up the device. If not, replace your current peephole lens with the camera by following the comprehensive on-screen video and text instructions.

Remove your peephole lens using the included tool, then place the outer unit into the open peephole. If the hole is significantly larger than the outer unit tube, you can use the supplied adapter tube for a tighter fit.

Make sure the data cable is inserted without bending or binding. As soon as the cable is secure, slide the interior unit’s cover over the tube and tighten it with the included nut to join the two units. Holding the outdoor unit while you do this will be necessary. Before fully tightening the nut, make sure both units are straight. The data cable should then be snapped into the slot after any slack has been taken up using the plastic tab on the cable.

After placing the battery pack, press OK when you see the LED on the doorbell button begin to spin. Select your home network SSID to connect to your Wi-Fi after allowing the doorbell to join the network. Once you’re connected, a voice prompt will let you know and you’ll be asked to configure motion detection and privacy settings as well as run an internet connectivity test. If you’d rather, you can skip these steps and configure them later. You’re all set to go once you snap the interior cover into place.

In tests, the Peephole Cam produced clear 1080p video, displaying vibrant colors during the day and clear black-and-white imagery at night. Although there was some barrel distortion near the edges, visitor images were unaffected, just like with the Ring Video Doorbell Pro. Alerts for motion and doorbell rang instantly, and the recorded video was just as clear as the live feed.

Both my IFTTT applet to have a Philips Hue light turn on when the doorbell was pressed and my Alexa commands to have a TV using an Amazon Fire TV Stick display video from the camera both worked perfectly. The Knock Detection feature performed as promised, sending a push notification and recording a video when someone knocked on the door. The two-way audio was clear and loud.

Pricing Of Ring Peephole Cam

Although the camera itself is inexpensive, you should also get a monthly subscription plan.

At about $130, the Ring Peephole Cam is reasonably priced. But bear in mind that you’ll probably want to pay an additional fee for a Ring Protect plan, which is still fairly reasonable.

Your ability to upload video clips to the cloud is only available with the Ring Protect plan. You cannot save video clips anywhere else without a subscription because The Ring does not provide local storage options.

Ring Protect Subscription Plans

Fortunately, Ring Protect plans are reasonably priced. For just three dollars a month, the Basic plan includes Ring Protect’s other features as well as 60 days’ worth of video clips.

Features for which a Ring Protect subscription is necessary:

  • Video saving
  • Photo capture
  • Extended warranties (with Plus plan)
  • 10% off certain Ring products (with Plus plan)

It only costs a little per month for one camera. You ought to consider upgrading to the Ring Plus plan if you own several Ring devices. Additionally, it comes with expert monitoring for your Ring Alarm home security system and covers all the devices in your home.

Customer Review From Amazon

  • “I bought the Ring peephole to replace my old optical peephole and to increase security a little bit. The optical peephole’s hole was a little large, but the Ring was simple to install, and its two pieces—three if you count the back cover—fit together without difficulty and completely covered the door’s hole on either side.”
  • “Having received the third device directly from Ring, I am now updating this. This device, which came directly from RING, actually works as it should. After the free 30-day trial, they do charge you to store the videos, but the cost is only $3 per month or $30 per year, so it’s not too bad. “
  • “I absolutely love the ring peephole I bought, and I have no regrets about making this decision. I do, in fact, reside in apartments, just to be clear. For apartment dwellers, the peephole is by far the best choice. You get the same quality and outcomes as a standard ring doorbell without having to drill anything. The first original battery charge takes an eternity, but the setup is simple. I advise purchasing an additional battery. “
  • “If your doorbell has an odd angle, this is ideal for apartments or homes because it will give you access to street view. This would make a wonderful housewarming present for someone moving into their first apartment or college residence. In the end, I decided to purchase the window and door security system. wish they would sell it on the ring website. “
  • “The Ring’s battery needed to be charged, which took a few hours, but it was supplied with a USB cable, so any standard USB wall charger would work.”
