A notice of impending legal action has been filed against the West Virginia State Police (WVSP) by three women who claim to have participated in West Virginia Junior Trooper programs at the State Police Academy when they were under the age of 18.
These women, along with up to 20 other female law enforcement officers from across the state, are represented by Wheeling attorney Teresa Toriseva. They are all worried that they might have been covertly recorded in the academy women’s locker room.
The extent to which a hidden camera was installed and used inside the female locker room at the State Police Academy is the subject of an active investigation being conducted under the direction of Interim WVSP Superintendent Jack Chambers.
In a press release, Toriseva claimed that her clients and other female Junior Trooper program participants used the female locker room at the academy while the cameras might have been active. The Junior Trooper Program was discontinued in 2020, according to her, but the academy’s female students were still being taped at that time.
“The deeper the investigation goes, the more shocking the conduct,” In the press release, Toriseva said. “The women who attended the academy at the time the camera or cameras were in operation hope they were not filmed. The onus is now on the West Virginia State Police to show that these women were not filmed in light of the admitted destruction of evidence.”
Chambers has expressed regret to any women who may have been harmed by the covert camera and said he is working to find all potential victims of the crime.
Toriseva stated in the notice to sue that instead of going to court, her clients want to meet to talk about the claims and a potential resolution.
“Voyeurism is never a single incident,” Toriseva said. “Along with these new three, we anticipate that many more will come forward as the situation develops.”
