Apple upgrades the camera system with each new iPhone iteration, and the iPhone 15 series is no different. MacRumors has obtained detailed information about the camera systems of the iPhone 15 lineup, from the standard iPhone 15 with upgraded 48-megapixel camera to the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s brand-new telescopic periscope.
iPhone 15 and 15 Plus
- Main Camera: 48-megapixel image sensor, ƒ/1.6 aperture
- Ultra Wide Camera: 12-megapixel image sensor, ƒ/2.4 aperture
The base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models are anticipated to include a brand-new 48-megapixel Sony image sensor, which is a significant improvement over the iPhone 14’s 12-megapixel Main camera. More megapixels will enable images with higher resolution and better detail. The Sony IMX-803 image sensor from the iPhone 14 Pro is not anticipated to be used in the iPhone 15 in favor of a new Sony sensor with enhanced capabilities.

The most intriguing model in the lineup by far is the “iPhone 15 Pro Max.” MacRumors has confirmed with industry sources that the iPhone 15 According to earlier rumors from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Pro Max will have an entirely new periscope lens system for the Telephoto camera. The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s zoom capabilities will undoubtedly advance thanks to periscope zoom technology. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is anticipated to have between 5x and 10x zoom, in contrast to the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 3x zoom limit.
In contrast to most cameras, which have an image sensor directly below the lens, folded optics systems direct light toward the image sensor using angled mirrors. The directional shift enables optical zoom that is greater than that made possible by a typical telephoto camera system.
Due to space restrictions, Apple probably decided to limit use of the periscope lens to the iPhone 15 Pro Max for the time being. The camera module used in the ‘iPhone 15 Pro’ Max, according to information from our sources, is, to a certain extent, larger than the camera modules used in the ‘iPhone 14 Pro’ models and the smaller ‘iPhone 15 Pro’.
