Investigators from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office have detained a physician on suspicion of concealing a camera at Ochsner Medical Center in order to record employees as they used the restroom at the hospital in Old Jefferson.

Following his arrest at the hospital in the 1500 block of Jefferson Highway on Wednesday morning, Andrew Matthews, 31, of Jefferson, was charged with 10 counts of video voyeurism, according to Captain. spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, Jason Rivarde.

Detectives have identified at least 10 individual victims in the “dozens of videos” recorded inside the bathrooms, Rivarde said.

According to Ocshner, Matthews had been employed there as a second-year resident.

Ochsner Regional Medical Director George Loss Jr. released a statement on Thursday. said, “We can confirm that a resident trainee was detained for allegedly putting a recording device inside an employee bathroom at our Jefferson Highway campus without permission. The person’s employment has been cut short.”

According to Rivarde, the camera was found by an anonymous employee on Wednesday morning while using the restroom and was reported.

“While we are unable to comment further on the specifics of an ongoing investigation, we can reassure our community that our security team acted quickly and performed a thorough sweep of the campus, including all restrooms, call rooms, and other private staff and patient areas. No other devices were found,” In his statement, Loss said.

In the early morning, around 11:30, the hospital contacted the Sheriff’s Office., Security identified Matthews as a potential suspect and handed the camera over to detectives, according to Rivarde.

The single device appears to have been placed in “staff only” restrooms, which are unisex, according to authorities. The Sheriff’s Office declined to specify how long they think Matthews had been secretly filming coworkers.

As they examine the case’s evidence, the detectives anticipate the investigation to go on for a number of weeks, according to Rivarde. There was no additional data available.

“We place the utmost importance on ensuring the safety of all of our patients, guests, and staff. Ochsner Health does not and will not tolerate violations of privacy or illegal activity of any kind,” Loss said.

At the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna, Matthews was being held without bond on Thursday.
