With the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro Max later this year, Apple is anticipated to introduce a periscope camera for the first time to its iPhone lineup. However, a recent report claims that those who hoped the technology would eventually make its way to the less powerful iPhone 16 Pro in 2024 will be disappointed.
Apple could increase the optical zoom capability of its camera by using a periscope camera without adding any additional thickness to the iPhone’s already-thin design. It’s a strategy that other smartphone manufacturers, like Samsung, already employ, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max is anticipated to be the first to include one. It appears that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will include it as well next year.
Prominent analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims in a series of tweets that despite previous market expectations that more iPhones would benefit from the technology, Apple will keep the periscope camera as an iPhone 16 Pro Max feature in 2024.
A report from The Elec published earlier in January that claimed the exact opposite is true is contradicted by the Kuo report. According to that rumor, the iPhone 16 Pro would have the same camera.
However, it does make sense to keep the camera feature restricted to the Pro Max. As evidenced by the fact that the 48-megapixel camera was only added to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models in 2022, Apple continues to try to differentiate its iPhone models more. A16 Bionic, a new chip, is also available for those same iPhones, while A15 Bionic is still available for non-Pro models.
Whatever Apple’s plans, we won’t know for sure until September, when the new models are anticipated to be formally introduced.
